Mini pill after birth

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been in the same boat, I had my baby back in May, when I went for my 8 week review my doctors said about going back on contraception, so I went on the mini pill, however I’ve had a period, which I thought you weren’t meant to have one, also I’ve bleed on and off for 8 days, has anyone else had issues with the mini pill, it’s getting very frustrating now

Yes you can have breakthrough bleeding on the mini pill. It can either settle down or not. It took 4 months for my periods to stop and I have had two random periods in the last year, although one of those was probably due to a couple of missed pills.

It’s quite common to have some irregular bleeding or spotting on the mini pill, especially in the first weeks. They should have warned you about that, but it’s completely normal. In most cases it settles down but if it carries on you could go back and ask to switch to a different contraceptive. What can sometimes help to minimise the bleeding is take it really strictly at exactly the same time every day (difficult when you’re looking after a young baby!). Hopefully it settles down soon!

I went on the mini pill for the first time after my son was born in December 2023 after being on the injection for 20 or so years prior to him being born and I continued to have periods which I just passed off as it settling down, until I got another positive pregnancy test result in September 2024 🫣 when I told the midwife I had been on the mini pill she said she’d heard of it happening with a few people and the mini pill sometimes just doesn’t work with you! Needless to say I will be returning to my trusty injection from now on since ending up with two under twos!

I had the mini pill after having a baby in 2021, I never stopped having periods. I also had breakthrough bleeding which would stop for a few months and then start again, I finally went off the mini pill in November after 3.5 years as I was sick of it. Since I've gone off it the breakthrough bleeding has completely stopped, so I won't be going back on it.
