New thread as the other one is nearly full Xmas Shock!

Our next baby should be pmgkt's, but I won't if any little cheeky monkey will sneak in before Thursday?

Just been doing some really interesting blogpost reading on effective contractions.

According to this:

  • the 0.5cm / 1cm per hour dilation rate often quoted and used by hospitals is based on 1950s research and estimates that all women's bodies are the same whereas this poster thinks "every woman?s contraction pattern is unique"
  • you have to feel comfortable to labour and there's oxytocin release, and therefore contractions, are influenced by external factors e.g. people, space, light [I think it's fascinating that labour and birth is way, way more of an emotional process than hospitals seem to acknowledge.]
  • The cervix only shows us one piece of the picture ? contractions may have done a fantastic job of rotating a baby and moving him down but not opened the cervix much (yet). A woman can go from a 3cm dilated cervix to birth within minutes or stay at 9cm for hours ? cervixes can even close back up.

Very interesting Bealos. Makes sense. My horses only foal if they are relaxed and 99% of the time in the middle of the night when it's properly dark. We are all mammals after all...

I just had a sweep - except that I didn't, as baby's head is pressing down so much the MW couldn't get her fingers into the cervix. So she just poked around as best she could. Trying again Sat. Wasn't the most pleasant sensation and I gripped DP's hand very hard!

Hormonalhell · 10/01/2013 13:12

Good info Bealos, something to think about Smile

Lost bobbles it's soooo frustrating init??! Oh well we both have less than a week to due date and then I'm not budging until they give me a due date, wondering if u having a lazy boy like me Grin

katolla · 10/01/2013 14:01

My sympathy to everyone in labour at the moment! You poor things.

I assume that constant braxton hicks for the last 2 months of pregnancy mean I'll have a quick and easy labour. jklol I will probably need an emergency caesarian or something.

DP asked last night if hospital bag was packed and I said not really, he said well you've got clothes for you and nappies for the baby haven't you, that's all done then. :(

happyhow · 10/01/2013 14:51

Interesting info Bealos.

My period type pain has come back with a vengeance all of a sudden. But its really really bad period pain and definitely peaks then wears off. Proper contraction? Walking around Asda was fun...

Hubby has just left for a job interview so I'm hoping it stays this way for a little while although he's not far away. His friend is here though currently papering our hallway if I need anyone!

JBtulip · 10/01/2013 15:02

Well I saw the midwife this morning for a stretch and sweep and I am 3cm dilated Shock so after having BH for the last 3 weeks almost all day every day and being disappointed that they stop at night am so pleased something is actually happening! I guess this means I am in latent labour?! Confused

Am 40+7 and ready for baby to be here now. The midwife did sound quite positive that things would happen soon. Waters haven't gone and only had tiny bit of show - I think! So I am working up the energy to go and potter round the house and encourage things along.

Good luck to everyone in labour. Smile

dieciocho · 10/01/2013 17:04

Just to update you all: I am now a mummy!Shock

Violet was born on Monday afternoon by semi-emergency caesarean Sad - water issues, placenta problems, early contractions starting...doctors' fear.
She's pretty healthy, despite being 3 1/2 weeks early (for EDD). We spent our first night in High Dependency.
She's pretty weeny: 3.14kgs, so not many of our lovely inherited clothes fit her!
Breastfeeding is not working because she's so small and a wee bit under-developed. I'm expressing colostrum for daytime feeds, but she's having formula feeds during the night. Not ideal I do know and I'm searching for any support I can find. Hopefully the arrival of my real milk in the next few days will mean she feeds better.

preggofabulous · 10/01/2013 17:12

Congrats dieciocho! My little one had problems feeding too and has had to have formula just to get something down him. Am planning to express and my milk is starting to build up. You're right, its not ideal, and I felt bad as they really push breastfeeding at you. But its better they have formula than nothing! And even the smallest bit of breast milk does them good x

Birdies · 10/01/2013 17:47

Congrats diecio and another gorgeous name! Please don't feel bad about using formula - you're doing what's best for your baby and all you can do with breastfeeding is try.

woody2313 · 10/01/2013 19:06

Congratulations dieciocho!

bealos · 10/01/2013 20:14

congratulations dieciocho and a really lovely name.

Hormonalhell · 10/01/2013 21:06

Just had 3 sepArate episodes of trickles (not quite gushes but enough to soak 2 maternity pads) I've been to loo about 20 mins ago so surely it's not wee although it does smell like urine. Not going to hosp yet as pains stopped. Just don't know what to think anymore Hmm

BuntyCollocks · 10/01/2013 21:48

Congrats, dieciocho! Beautiful name.

hormonal get thee to hospital. Sounds like waters have went and they need to confirm/induce you if your contractions don't start themselves.

Hormonalhell · 10/01/2013 21:51

I got hosp appt in morning do u think I be ok to wait til then? Not in pain and worried it gonna be another false alarm Hmm

SpringFlowers · 10/01/2013 22:06

You should call them and see what they say. It probably is fine to wait but better to take their advice. It sounds very exciting!

Pascha · 10/01/2013 22:06

Hormonal go and ring the labour ward. The midwives will want to know tonight.

Hormonalhell · 10/01/2013 22:36

Yes I gotta go down and be checked but they said if it is waters they will prob induce me tomorrow anyway...so fx it's the real thing I guess it could be as I'm 39+2Smile

happyhow · 11/01/2013 06:41

Well, at 02:16 this morning we had a boy!! Grin

Think we're going with Bailey Alan for his name. 8 hrs of full blown labour with a failed epidural and another one that didn't completely work and he's here. He's not really loving the boob so far but has done 2 massive meconium nappies already. He's currently sleeping on my chest as I can't get him to settle in the hospital crib.

Guess I won't be going to Gary Barlow now but I think this is a pretty good reason... Smile

Congrats to you too diecho!!

Tugstonia · 11/01/2013 07:07

Congratulations happy and diecho! Hope you're both doing well :)

Best of luck hormonal fx it's the real deal for you.

I'm 39 weeks today. Come on baby, I want to meet you!

theboutiquemummy · 11/01/2013 07:09

dieciocho congratulations lovely name don't worry too much about the feeding I got really stressed about it but now I'm home I understand what they are doing and why it's much tougher at home but without all the hospital noise n when you are at home relaxed your milk will prob come in properly. Mines only just come in now

hormonal congratulations Grin it makes it all worthwhile doesn't it x Well done for hanging in there Smile

theboutiquemummy · 11/01/2013 07:12

happy I meant happy loving this sleep depravation BlushBlushBlushBlush

Hormonalhell · 11/01/2013 08:21

Congratulations Happyhow, love the name Bailey Smile

I myself am still without child HmmConfused

False alarm again! I have bladder incontinence caused by water infection and my waters are still intact....oh well he's gotta come out at some point

salt1 · 11/01/2013 08:36

congrats to the recent new mommies. thought i had a little tricke of something this morning, but probably just wee.
