I am delighted to announce that Harriet Rose was born yesterday 22nd June at 1633 Cyprus time weighing 8lb 6.
I was induced on Wed for a number of reasons following a sweep on the Tues. On arrival at the hospital I was assessed and the decision was made to bypass the pessaries and break my waters right away. Unfortunately despite my best efforts walking up and down stairs and stomping round the block I was not able to start any significant contractions. My midwives were fantastic and gave me every opportunity leaving me for as long as possible before we finally resorted to the drip at 2.30pm (I was 4 cm by then and having some irregular contractions but nothing significant). The drip was started nice and slow but soon began to take effect and dd2 was born two hours later much to my relief.
I am totally gobsmacked that she is a girl as I was convinced I was having a boy . I feel like the luckiest person alive now though.
For those of you who followed my stresses regarding delivering at Limassol General without pain relief thank you for all your support. I feel so grateful that Harriet was overdue and decided to hang on until our UK midwives were authorised to practice in Cyprus as my care was amazing and the Medical Centre where I delivered was just like a private hospital with a single room with ensuite shower and toilet, TV, fridge etc (yes I stayed in a night ). I was also totally spoilt as the only patient with midwives who have not been able to get their hands on babies or birthing mothers for a very long time. I can't tell you how lucky I feel. A very different story to dd1's waterbirth in York but equally wonderful for different reasons.
And for all my fuss about pain relief DH has advised me I used the gas and air three times lol.

Hey Coop that's fab news, so very glad it worked out how you wanted it too - know you've been through the mill over it all.
And Harriet Rose - what a beautiful name.
Have a lovely time getting to know your new babe x

Congratulations Coop, and welcome Harriet Rose !!! I'm so pleased that the whole birth situation sorted itself out and you received the care you wanted.

PollyLogos · 25/06/2005 08:42

Hey cooperoo congratulations to you, dh and dd1!! I am so glad to hear that after all the agonising you were able to have the British midwives.

Harriet Rose is an absolutely beautiful name. I think somehow a bit of greekness has got into her -thats why she was late. You know i'm sure that 'us'greeks are never on time....

Very best wishes to you all.

Cooperoo · 25/06/2005 18:03

Ha ha Polly. I think there may be some truth in that. The Cypriot/Greek lifestyle is certainly a laid back one. So far she is a very relaxed baby too, happy to feed and sleep. Waiting for that to change soon though .

Coop - well done babe - many congratulations and welcome to little Harriet

Miaou · 26/06/2005 23:12

Congratulations Cooperoo - so glad it worked out for you in the end! You probably didn't need much/any pain relief because you were so relaxed about the situation you were in - a double bonus

And congrats on having your dd - I remember that "gobsmacked" feeling when dd2 arrived as I too was absolutely convinced I was having a boy!

moondog · 26/06/2005 23:15

Brilliant that it all worked out in the end. Welcome to baby Harriet (my grandmother's name)!!

Thanks everyone .
Miaou - You are absolutely and completely right about the pain relief thing. I felt in such safe hands and was totally confident in the midwives and where I was and so was relaxed and able to get on with things. It was nice and quick too!
I think I am just about used to my GIRL now and totally thrilled. (I was over the moon from the start as I didn't really mind what I had in the end - initially I had wanted another girl- but was SO sure she was a boy I could hardly believe it)
