My thoughts on baby showers

An innocent conversation when asked "are you going to your nieces baby shower" "I said "no" "I don't believe in them" the next thing I get that day or the day after off my niece to confirm what I said and I repeated what I said I then got a tirade of anger "your wishing my baby dead and as far as I'm concerned your dead to me" that was 11 years ago. It still grates me, there was no meet up to discuss, I tried ringing my brother then rang her sister who told me to stop involving her dad then I got a call from her mum to stop ringing and to stay away. All from an innocent comment. I tried speaking with my brother recently and wants me to apologise, if he knew me well enough there was no malice in what I said and they chose to make me guilty from the off. The amount of people I've spoken to especially mums, they are in shock and disbelief that it's been taken this way. I went to school with their mum who I realise isn't a nice person at all.

You ‘don’t believe in them’ ? Well, they do exist!

You could have just said ‘it’s not my cup of tea’ or ‘I’m not free that day’ rather than make a really judgemental comment.

I mean, I think they’re tacky and unnecessary, but I absolutely wouldn’t let my judgement show if I was invited to one. I’d either go and mingle with friends and family and slap a smile on my face, because it’s obviously important to the pregnant woman, or I’d just decline.

It wasn't a judgemental comment...it was an innocent one....

They sound mad.

JesusFuckingChristAmerica · 09/03/2025 17:03

But agree, I don't believe in them sounds very condescending.

Do you all struggle with social skills?

Changingplace · 09/03/2025 17:03

They sound utterly insane, sorry they overreacted so much.

CurlewKate · 09/03/2025 17:13

You were tactless. They are insane.
