Hi all

I had a homebirth booked and organised and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new baby.Overdue and fed up i had a sweep onFriday last week and had niggles but no baby.Had an appt to see my mw on Monday the 31st at 4pm for another sweep.
Luckily my mum had popped in for a visit so dp and i went off to see the mw.Dp waited in the waiting room and off i went to have it done.
Mw does sweep and says i'm 2/3 cms dilated,Yeehah i said.

Mw says there is something she can feel around my pubic arch that shouldn't be there, and i have to go straight to delivery suite to have a check up done immediatly and to take a hospital bag "just in case".So i am crying and sobbing and she explains the problem. She can feel either a "wrinkling of the membranes" or what could be whats known as "vasa previa" which when the membranes rupture can be dangerous for the baby (sometimes fatal)as it can cause the baby to hemmorage.

Thankfully dp managed to get me into car and home where we tell my mum who gets bags into car and says not to worry as she will stay over if it's not good news.
In delivery suite i am examined,by monitering the baby.having a scan,a really painful internal, and a special scan etc.At the end of all that they cannot 100% gaurantee the problem is not there so homebirth is not possible which i am happy not to have now just in case.

I have to have my waters broken in theatre and all being well can deliver normally.if theres a problem they will do an emergency cs.Go to theatre and waters broken, baby fine and no problems so moniters off and crack on with having a baby.

Waters broken at 9.30pm,moved to room with a pool at 10.30pm.Laboured away ok,2 birthing pals arrived, got in pool at 11.30pm,contractions were sooo intense in water and labour really sped up so had gas and air.Decided to come out of pool at 12.40 to be examined and was 8cms.Decided i wasn't coping with pain and asked for pethidine/diamorphine.Mw went off to arrange it and within 5 mins i wanted to push.Birthing pals panicking as i had started to push,mw comes back and it's all go.I had gone from 8-10cms in 10 mins.

So my lovely new dd was born at exactly 1am with the cord round her neck and looking awfully blue.Cord untangled and all fine.Weighed in at 8lbs 12oz and is beatiful.

I didn't get my homebirth and tbh i don't care.if the vasa previa had been there and gone undiagnosed i could have had no baby at all.

bf is going fab and i am a very lucky mummy!!!
If you managed to read all of this WELL DONE{smile]

Congratulations agalch. Glad you are both fine despite not getting homebirth. Glad feeding is going well

agalch · 12/08/2006 07:14

Thanks everyone

The more i have had time to think about it the more i have realised that i did have my homebirth in a way, just happened in hospital.

My plan for homebirth included music, clary sage, pool and entinox etc.And thats what my wonderful mw provided for me in hospital.

I managed to have Eilidh with the pool and entinox and no other drugs which was the aim of my homebirth so i am totally happy with what happened.Having my little girl safely was more important than anything else and thats what i got.

Loving being a mummy for the 4th (and final) time and really happy the bf is going well again.

xx

1Baby1Bump · 12/08/2006 09:48

i think its a lovely story, not a sad one. maybe a bit dissapointing for you but your baby is fine!

agalch · 12/08/2006 12:04

Colditz,dd1 was 9lbs 14oz so Eilidh is a tiddler in comparison lol. Is now 9lbs 2oz so be a while until she's even her sisters birth weight.

Congratulations aglach
I've been without access to a comp for 2 weeks so have only just caught up. Was thinking about you though.
Shame that you didn't get your homebirth, but she's here now and that's what matters. Glad that everything is going well.
Hope to keep in touch.

Hi Suni

i wondered where you'd got to!! The birth itself was fab so i have no regrets at all about not having a homebirth.I was glad to read your story and happy for you that you managed so well at home.

see you over on post-natal??
