I often think about you. The firsts must seem like such a hurdle. I think that's a wonderful idea your kids have for baking a cake

Clary · 24/01/2009 21:18

Oh OJ how difficult it must be.

Yes what a good idea to do a cake. Thinking of you tomorrow.

Still think of you and Steve every time I see GU.

Your children are fantastic.

wiggleit · 24/01/2009 21:19

Thinking of you 2 OJ..xx

The first anniversaries are awful, as are the rest. It's good that the kids want to do something. He will never stop being their Dad. xx

MummyDoIt · 24/01/2009 21:21

That will be a tough one. DH's birthday would have been 22nd September, just under a month after he died, so we got that 'first' very early on. The boys decided they wanted chocolate cake and they wanted candles on it. We stood in front of his photograph, singing happy birthday to him. Their idea so I did it for them but it was hard. They got upset because they couldn't buy a present for Daddy so we decided we would each have a little present on Daddy's birthday. I think the presents and the chocolate cake will become a tradition.

I hope you get through it okay. You sound like you're doing a great job with the kids, doing the things that will give them some comfort. Is there anything you're planning to do for yourself that was special to you and Steve? I had a glass of DH's favourite wine after the boys had gone to bed and toasted him.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

VaginaShmergina · 24/01/2009 21:24

Hey OJ, it's my Dads birthday too tomorrow, I shall raise a glass to Steve too.

You are doing so well and I am sure Steve would approve of the cake and balloon ideas that the DC's have had.

I saw your latest profile pic on FB and thought how much like Steve, Elliot is looking, a handsome young man indeed. He is growing up so fast.

I am sure you will do what feels right for you and the kids tomorrow. I agree with everybody else, the first of everything is the hardest. Lots of love to you all for tomorrow and always x

PS don't forget the Southern Comfort

chegirl · 24/01/2009 21:35

Sorry OJ. I followed your story but rarely posted.

Weve just had my DD's 17th birthday. I cant believe it - 17!

I tried to do a balloon thingy but the bloody woman in the shop let me down.

I bought a lovely butterfly cake (DS would have been very annoyed if I hadnt). I ended up letting of a HUGE HUGE HUGE tinkebell balloon on the green outside my house.

It went up for MILES so I would recommend a tinkerbelle balloon anyday

'firsts' are always hard but they do give us an opportunity to do what ever helps IYSWIM.

I hope it goes ok for you and your children. All the beset.

hi oj

I suppose as well as getting through the day, you will be wanting it to be a celebration of his life.

I know you will do a fantastic job with the children and eat lots of trifle.

(save yourself some rum for when they're all in bed)

weetimorousdizzybeastie · 25/01/2009 00:00

OJ how lovely the kids want to celebrate his life in such a nice way

we managed Mum's birthday pretty badly as dad was in hosp getting his hip replaced so feeling a bit sorry for himself and it was her 6 month anny yesterday and I can't quite believe it.

I hope tomorrow goes as well as it can for you all. I think its tribute to you and Steve that you have such caring kids who are obviously a great support to you at such a time

mammyofET · 25/01/2009 00:17

OJ haven't posted on your threads before but I have followed them and often think of you.

just seen this Oj ,will be a tough day for you all,but its nice that you want to celebrate Steves birthday.I will think of you.

ThumbBurns · 25/01/2009 00:38

always a tough one to deal with OJ but lots of love and strength to you all to get through it.

We generally go to the cemetery on special days and put something on the grave, a card or a little something that feels like giving them a gift. My mum, nan and grandad are all in the same plot so it has quite a lot of gifts on it, although mostly they are potplants that can be changed throughout the year.

onlyjoking9329 · 25/01/2009 10:09

Thanks for all your kind words, today is a funny day, we always used to celebrate it, 2 years ago today steve was in hospital having tests and scans, he was just opening his presents when the consultant came round and told us that steve had MS and a brain tumour, steve joked about it and said"happy birthday" to me, he said it was his worst birthday present. last birthday he was quite poorly but he did enjoy his birthday cake thou he wasn't aware it was his birthday i knew it would be his last birthday.
it is of course his twin brothers birthday so i know it will be difficult for him today.
