How do you deal (or help someone deal with) bereavement at this time of year?

A close friend of my mums was given 6-9m a couple of weeks ago - so they thought that this would be their last Christmas together.

Sadly after a dramatic turn for the worst overnight it looks like they won't have Christmas together after all . How can I help my mum? She lost her previous best friend last year a few weeks before Christmas....but this is just so close to Christmas and so much more sudden.

She was going to spend Christmas at home with her partner and her friend. Do I invite her to ours? Or will that seem as though I am taking pity on them? I don't think they would come anyway TBH...but I don't want to rub it in by asking knowing they are likely to reject our offer.

Do I make a fuss? Keep it low key?
