Smells and tastes bringing memories

Tonight for dinner we had a Danish dish (Frikadeller) for dinner. My mum has been dead 10 years and yet when I sat down on the sofa I thought to myself. "Oh I will call mum and tell her we had Frikadeller ". I do not recall the last time I thought to "call" her as 10 years is a long time, Also we didn't have the easiest of relationships though I know she loved her children.

However. Taste and smells brings memories so strongly I find. Anyone else?

It's silly for me and not in the same boat as having lost someone, but I was reading a book on a certain page and was loving the beans on toast I was eating at the same time. Now every time I open that page I remember that meal, the taste and scent. Or vice versa if I eat beans on toast. I remember once I ate something and it brought back a bad memory which meant I couldn't eat that food. They do say that certain tastes and smells can trigger linked memories.

For me it wasn't a taste, it was a 'thing'. I was driving along a little road and I saw a deer and a hare standing together in a field as though having a conversation. I though 'I must tell Dad...'

He's been gone for nearly twenty years.

It hits you at the most unexpected times, doesn't it?

Recently, a woman walked past me on the street, and her perfume reminded me of my mum's 🥹

If I smell pipe tobacco it makes me think of my grandad. He's been gone 35 years.... the memories do linger ❤️
