What is the usual time period between a death and an inquest?

We have an inquest date that will be ten weeks exactly after the date of death. When are we likely to see documents? What are the documents likely to include? Is this an average timeframe? TIA.

I am sorry for you loss.

I don't think an 'average time' is something anyone can say.
It will depend on what they need to investigate after the person dies.
I presume there will be different wait times in different areas as well.

In our family case if was only 7 weeks (I think) but I was talking to someone last year, where there was a possibility of a medical negligence claim and it was 10 months.
I don't know how much of this was how complicated the case was, how much was the fact it is a different part of the country, or how much this is because one was over 20 years ago and one much more recently.

Length of wait will vary according to postcode, and to how many other people die around the same time. I know of an 8 week wait. Outcome stated cause of death but could not pinpoint day of death, just a likely 72 hour period. They also had a toxin report showing what drugs found in blood.

It really depends on the investigation. There’s not an average.

We are still waiting for ds's after q8 months. Won't be for another 3 months. Postponed 4 times.

It depends on the situation. In my relatives case there was police investigation. So the inquest has been post poned. It has been 2 1/2 years and still no inquest.

Abustedflush · 27/04/2026 22:32

I waited over 4 years.

My relatives final hearing was 8 months after her death. The initial one was a few weeks afterwards but it was postponed as the coroner needed more information from the hospital. Documents were available shortly afterwards.
