Tell us once v calling pensions/ attendance allowance

My DF died around a week ago. DM knows we can do the Tell us Once service after death is registered, but we are concerned Dad's state pension and attendance allowance is being paid in the meantime.
We will keep it separate but is there any merit in spending the hold time to both govt departments and telling them now? Will using Tell us Once be ok to do too afterwards- it could be another week or 10 days before the death is registered and payments are due in 2 weeks. Thank you.

You need the death cert to tell any official body, so you might as well use Tell Us Once. You might not need to pay everything back, as benefits are usually paid in arrears.

Thank you, that would give us some time too as Tell Us Once says it can take 5 weeks to update( hoping quicker).

You can't use the Tell Us Once service until you have the DC from the Registrar.

The coroner actually did the Tell us once for us because we only have an interim death certificate until there is an enquiry into mum’s cause of death, which won’t be until March. I didn’t even know they were going to. But it does make things easier.

I’m very sorry for your loss. As far as I know, it’s not an issue if payments continue until you use Tell Us Once. Just don’t spend the money, as it will be adjusted or reclaimed automatically after notification.

You can ring the pensions/ attendance allowance depts directly even without a death cert (you only need to ring one of them as that one will tell the other). You need the death cert if you're doing it via "tell us once".

Once you have the interim certificate you can email the registrar to obtain a code for Tell Us Once. We have had to do this very recently. The email from the coroner with the interim certificate attached had the email address for the registrar on it.

The coroner did it for us - we were given a code saying that Tell us once had been done. The registrar emailed us the code once the coroner told them.

Actually- I am wrong! Thank goodness for this thread. I did need to tell them on gov.co.uk, they hadn’t done it for me. I only had 48 hours left to register it. Thank you guys!

BMW6 · 26/01/2026 19:59

So the just the code to use Tell Us Once was actually what the Coroner gave you??

Gingercar · 26/01/2026 23:36

It was an email from the registrar. I didn’t read it properly😱!
