Have reached my sister’s age

My sister died just over seven years ago. Today I am exactly the same age as she was when she died - 61 years 6 months and 1 day. I don’t obsessively track the dates etc, it’s just someone asked me recently how old she was when she died and I realised we were roughly the same age so then I worked it out. It just seems so strange that tomorrow I will be older than my older sister ever was. I can’t explain why this feels so significant and no one I’ve mentioned it to in real life seems to get it so maybe I’m just being a bit odd?

No I wouldn’t say it’s odd at all. Very normal to think of it.

TinselTitts · 07/12/2025 22:02

It's very normal OP.

My sister died very suddenly aged 36 and I surpassed her 20 years ago.

It still feels odd wondering what sort of life she might have had Flowers

💐 for you and for your big sister. I wish you peace

I’m now 8 years older than my older sister ever got to be. I know exactly how you feel.
I’m also 9 years older than my dad, which is really odd.
It makes me remember that getting older is a privilege…

My brother died aged 39 and I had quite a wobble when I turned 40, which was 8 years later. Even my parents were oblivious to me having any feelings about this (I don’t blame them of course - it’s not something you would think about). But I felt particularly alone in my grief at that point. Sending love! 💐

It's perfectly normal how you feel.

It’s a normal thing to think about. My brother died at 27 so I surpassed him a long time ago, but I remember it feeling really bizarre when that day came.

I completely understand. I’m now the same age that my DSis died 9 years ago. It’s a strange feeling I know. I’m not entirely sure what to make of it but I’m certain that’s it’s a normal reaction. It’s just cemented the fact that she died far too soon. She was 10 years older than me.

Thank you every one.

Yes, this. It’s a feeling that being alive is a privilege. I think the people around me think I’m being mawkish but it’s about appreciating life and making the most of the time I have. I know my sister would want me to be having a good life.

Big Hugs.

as you can see it's a totally normal reaction, but possibly something a lot of people who haven't lost a sibling haven't even considered at all. Lucky them huh.

I remember when my dad turned a year older than the age his Dad died he told me how relieved he was to have done so, he'd worried the whole year he'd die at the same age, and my Dad wasn't one for dwelling on things. Sadly he did die 'young' (65). I am around the age my Grandad died (and my Nana) & not that far off the age my Dad died. Sadly I have some of the same health issues...

Try to remember your sister would want you to enjoy your life as much as possible 🌷

Oh OP I get it.

My DSis died suddenly last year at 53 with a stroke. I will be 53 next month and am frankly petrified that I won’t make it past her age, I am dreading the next year and keep worrying about blood pressure and other issues I have. Honestly, I can’t wait to be 54.
