I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I know it has sadly but have not personally come across anyone having their parent die whilst they were abroad on holiday.

Even the undertakers we chose said that this was a first for them re the repatriation process (dad’s body was delivered to the undertakers from the airport).

My dad died on holiday in France, he died of a long term condition so although he wasn’t expected to die it wasn’t unexpected either. It wasn’t too difficult to arrange for him to be repatriated, we were all home within a few days. I think he’d have been pleased to die on holiday, he never let his illness hold him back so it was quite fitting that he died on the last day of his holiday.
Sorry for your loss OP

My DH died while he was on holiday abroad - he was retired and I was working at a school. It was very sudden and unexpected.
The embassy, tour operator and insurance company were wonderful. Kind, efficient and sensitive. The Greek funeral director that I appointed was thoughtful in every way. DH had previously said that he wanted direct cremation so we arranged that and then my son collected his ashes. The paperwork to fly these home wasn’t easy but again the funeral director helped and the airport staff were very willing to support too.

It’s really important to have travel insurance. Also to keep your passport contact info up to date. We had a delay finding out which was upsetting.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is a fantastic charity helping repatriate the deceased back to Ireland. Helped some friends of mine when their dad died abroad - we were all very grateful for their help.
