What to say to someone who's husband just dies?

MIL married 14 years ago. Her DH has died rather suddenly but expected.

What do we do? How do we support her from afar (we live opposite ends of the globe)?

Just had a similar experience with exmil, when her DH died recently. I've not dealt with grief much, however, one of the things I remember reading about before he passed away (which I have found useful over the last month since he died) was to just message randomly, explaining that she didn't need to reply, but just know we were thinking of her.

I've tried to keep in touch every few days with a brief call, or text and if I couldn't think of anything to say, I'd just say the above. Leaves the ball in their court for engaging, but also lets them know you're thinking about them.
