My lovely FIL has died

My wonderful FIL passed away in the early hours of this morning :( he was admitted into the local hospice 3 weeks ago (4 days after being given 2-3mths to live) as he deteriorated very quickly.

In December he was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer but by the time treatment started in April he was Stage 4. Poor old sod only had 3 rounds of immunotherapy as he wasn’t well enough for anything else.

We’ve spent the past few weeks planning his funeral and adjusting to the thought of him not being here anymore but now it’s real and heartbreaking. He was the centre of our family and I don’t know what we’re supposed to do without him.

He was a good man who will be missed by so many. After retiring from his paid job he volunteered as a first responder and personally saved multiple lives / hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property in numerous flood, bushfires, road crash rescues and a couple of cyclones! All day we’ve been receiving messages about what an honour it was to work alongside him.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Your FIL sounds like a wonderful man. It’s lovely that you are receiving many messages about what a good person he was- I had similar when my parents died (in both cases- both were good people who did a lot for others). Those messages are incredibly comforting for you and the rest of the family, and they will continue to bring comfort even years down the line because they confirm the impact that the person had in the world. We all know and feel that our loved ones are important, and when we hear it from others, it means a lot. Wishing you gentle days as you navigate your grief.

Im really sorry for your loss. It’s so wonderful to have really exceptional people in our lives but the pain when we lose them is excruciating. Take life a day at a time, be gentle with yourself. Plan a fitting send off, cry; grief is a very lengthy process. X
