Inquest: what to expect (trigger warning- RTA)

We’ve recently lost a very close family member due to a road traffic accident.

A postmortem has been carried out and we’ve been told there will be an inquest.

Can anyone tell me what to expect at an inquest, please?

If you’ve had a bereavement involving an inquest, how long after the death did it take place?

Thank you.

In our case the coroner's officer kept in touch with us from the time our son's body was transferred from the hospital. We were allowed to have the funeral after the post mortem but before the inquest. We were notified of the date of the inquest about a week beforehand. We were met at the court by a volunteer. He was a very kind gentleman who stayed with us until it was time to go into the court.
The coroner gave a brief explanation of proceedings, called witnesses, ambulance personnel and police officers to read statements, the pathologist gave his report then the coroner summed up and explained what he would record on the death certificate. It was quiet and respectful. It was hard, but necessary. I am very sorry for your loss OP.
