How do I go about seeing if I can do some kind of reading thing at funeral?

I have been informed of the date for my friend's funeral. Slightly dodgy situation with his mother and her brother (effectively 'his parents') so not comfortable with too much talking to them. His mother has made it clear she doesn't want to talk about her dead son. Grief and shock I think plus some other stuff that I won't go into here.

Anyway, in light of this, I'm not sure how to go about requesting the opportunity to speak at his funeral.

It won't be religious just a few words about him.

Also, any advice on being brave enough to do this - I think I'll feel very exposed??

I've done it a few times. Best thing is to send a card offering sympathy and saying: If there is anything I can do to help you at this difficult time, please do call me on XXXX. In particular, I would be deeply honoured to speak at the funeral about what a good person XXX was if you feel it would be appropriate.

Then if they don't want you to, they ignore it.

Chances are though, they'll say yes, please.

On the day, emotions are high but you'll find it's fine actually, I remember making everyone laugh at my ex-bfs funeral and I know he would have liked that. You get to hide behind a lectern anyway. (or a pulpity thing)
