Can I drive my late father's car legally?

My father died. I'm a named driver on his car. I also have fully comp and am insured to drive any car.

Can I continue to drive my dad's car or not?

Will call insurance but would be useful to know what to expect.

The car has to be insured in its own right for you to be a valid named driver .

I worked within the car insurance industry and the simple answer is no, with you also being fully comp the chances are your policy only will cover you for third party while driving other cars and one of the conditions is you must have the owners permission. You must alert the insurance company about your late father. Condolences about your father.

Sorry for your loss

I would be interested to know what your insurance company say?

If your own insurance covers you for any car I would have thought that would include a car without its own valid insurance - but I wouldn’t like to call it

Your dads insurance is no longer valid, and your 'driving other cars' cover is intended for emergency use only (ie, you'd be covered to move it to your house, or to take it to the garage), so you'll need to take out a new policy for it once it has been transferred into your ownership by the DVLA

His insurance will cease to be valid as soon as he died. So the car is not insured in its own right anymore. Therefore you cannot Drive it even 3rd party via your insurance.

No, you can not drive it for the reasons above. We investigated when my dad died.

I am sure when my DF died we phoned car insurance and as my DM was named driver, they simply took my DF's name off the policy.

You will also need to inform DVLA and send V5 to special Bereavement department (if car was registered on your DF's name). Tax will also be invalid. So have to retax it. But estate then gets refund of old tax.
