Scattering Ashes at sea - any experience?

In the next few weeks we are scattering a relative's ashes at sea (in accordance with his wishes) We have booked the boat, and there will be about 10 of us there.

We were wondering how to make it a special day and whether there are any specific protocols we need to think about.

Should one person take the container and empty it over the side (being careful about which way the wind is blowing!) or each person sprinkle a bit?

Shall we say some words, have a sort of ceremony?

Do we take a wreath to leave on the sea?

Any thoughts or ideas would be really welcome.

Friends of mine did this with their DH/DF's ashes. They decided on one person to pour the ashes into the water, and then everyone in the party threw a flower onto the water while someone read a poem....
Don't know whether any of that would work for you, but they felt it was just what they needed, and it helped them Flowers
