Blighted ovum?

I went for what I thought was my 12 week scan only to discover my aminiotic sac? is empty! I have been told to come back in two weeks for another scan in case my dates are wrong. The sac is just 2cm whatever that means.

At the moment I do not know how to feel. Has anybody else experienced this?

Sorry nevska, I've only just seen this. I didn't have a D&C because, although I was booked in for one a few days after the scan, I miscarried naturally within a few hours of the scan. I bled for a couple of weeks but I understand that you tend to bleed less if you have a D&C. We didn't try again for a couple of months because at the time, the Misscarriage Association had some research results on their website which suggested it was best to wait a while, but I don't think it is on their site any more, I suspect because there is more recent research which contradicts this. I got pg again quite quickly anyway.

aku, sorry the second scan confirmed the diagnosis. Good luck with trying again.

Thanks Gingernut for your messages!

Bunny2 have you been for the 12 week scan yet? I hope everything went OK!

Did any of you ladies, go for a follow up after the D&C? Do they check after that womb has gone back to normal or it's assumed if there are no out of the ordinary symptoms?

aku, how are you?

Hi,

Nevska, Gingernut, everyone. I am fine just keep getting blinding headaches! can't wait to start trying again though, I keep telling myself to get a grip or I will be soley disappointed if nothing happens in the next month or two.

nevska, I never had a follow-up, it was just assumed everything would return to normal on its own. My scan was ok but I got a higher risk of Downs Syndrome than I was expecting so more to worry about now!

aku, good luck over the next couple of months.

nevska, I never had a check-up either, and everything was fine. If you do feel something isn't right over the next few weeks, get it checked (sometimes you can get an infection but it's not that common).

Aku, the headaches sound horrible. Do you often have headaches? It might be hormonal and hopefully will settle down once your cycle gets back to normal. If they don't I would advise you to go to your doctor as it sounds rather severe. Just thought I'd mention as well, in case you weren't aware, that it's best to avoid ibuprofen when ttc.

Hello Ladies,

Aku, I also had very bad headaches! I thought it was just part of the getting back to normal. They have passed now.
Has the bleeding stopped with you? mine has been almost 2 weeks, in the beginning heavy but then very light and each day it seemed it was going to stop but then traces again. I think it's finally clearing out now.
I have also heard about the Ibuprofen not to taken when ttc, so is asperin for that matter... apparently.
I am also trying to stay positive and thinking about the time I will be ready to start trying again. hopefully with good results this time!

bunny2, I hope the next scan will show more encouraging results!!! have you thought of taking the other more complicated tasts?

Hi Penguin2 I just saw your post. This is currently the situation I am in as I had a blighted ovum but a perfectly fine baby in the other sac and now I’m 14 weeks.

I am worrying myself sick over articles which suggest there could be an implication to the healthy baby and higher risk of CP or other problems. Did you look into any of this at the time, I presume your baby was unaffected by the blighted ovum you had?

Sorry to ask - I’m looking for reassurance.

Thanks 😊
