Running the Great North Run in memory of my Mum, and for Cancer Research

As many of you will know from threads on this site, I sadly lost my Mum to cancer earlier this year.

She was a very active supporter of Cancer Research UK, and was always vocal about the fantastic work they do in helping fund research to fight the cancer battle. She was nearly always positive and upbeat (even when she had setbacks and disease progression) and she said she was grateful to have been able to extend her life long enough to have known her grandchildren!

In September this year I will be running the Great North Run - a half marathon - in memory of my Mum, and 'for Mums with cancer everywhere'.

Good luck Mo2, hope the training goes well and you double your target.

I always race in aid of Cancer Research UK, in memory of my mum's mum, it's a cause very close to my heart too.

I hope no-one is offended by your post, I can't conceive of why anyone would be.

Wow - I've just had e-mails to say that 4 people have sponsored me and I already have raised nearly £90 - thank you - I don't know who you are, as you're listed as anonymous (perhaps ticking the 'keep my name secret' box also supresses the comments box?)

Thanks Twink - you're right, but I just haven't had a chance to get onto Mumsnet today.

Have just mapped out my training programme for the next few months and am trying to encourage friends to come running with me... it's going to be a challenge getting fit to run 13 miles - I am SO unfit currently!

(If anyone missed the early part of this thread, more details about this here

Any other Mumsnetters doing it? Also, anyone (interested in) doing a Race for Life in the South (Crawley/Guildford etc) - thought I might do that as a gentle starter run!

I'm doing Brighton with my mum and dd. Planning to whizz round then go back and finish with them.

Just had a thought, are you following a 'plan' to get you up to 13 miles ? If not, I've got the schedules we've used to do our halves and would be happy to email you if that's any help.

Thanks Twink. I do have some schedules which I've got off various running sites and also a programme from my company gym, but if they don't seem to be working I'll let you know! Thanks.

I need to go and buy some new (serious!) running shoes though - any recommendations?

Mo2.....Good luck with it. This year is my 5th Race for Life - my 'in celebration/memory of' list gets longer every year. Just can't seem to manage to up my miles, but my current running partner has a marathon in mind so you never know

As far as running shoes go I wear Asics and can't seem to get used to anything else. Just make sure you go to a 'specialist sports shop' where they have a bit of experience.

Mo2 I've worn Nike (awful, didn't fit my feet at all) New Balance (good, because they do a wide fitting too), Saucony (good but wore out quickly & never recovered running RFL on a racecourse - Febreeze wouldn't shift the smell of horse) and am now in Asics but I get instep blisters after around 6 miles.

Best idea is to go to a specialist running store (not JJB type) and try on loads & get advice; feet and running style are such a personal thing that what works for me probably won't for you.

Well folks - just thought I'd 'bump' this as suddenly it seems to be September and I now have less than 1 week to go before The Great North Run for Cancer Research UK.

My training hasn't gone quite as rigorously as I planned way back in April, but never mind, I'm sure I'll stagger round somehow, even it it takes me three hours!

All the best with your run. It must be lovely to be at the tapering stage! I did the Glasgow 1/2 marathon in August (Great Scottish Run) and it was fantastic - best time I have run probably because of the crowd support, the adrenaline rush of running with lots of people etc. It was great and really good to look back on as the training gets tough for my CF marathon in November. Best thing I did for the 1/2 was buy posh running socks. If you don't have any then get them - it was like running on carpet and takes all the sweat away (of which there is much over that distance!). Please let us know how it goes.
