Very sad wedding to attend

We're going to a wedding of an old school friend on saturday. The wedding has been brought forward from November as the Bride's mum had been diagnosed with cancer. I emailed my friend, the groom yesterday to wish him all the best for the big day and he told me that the bride's mother had passed away a week or so ago but the wedding is going ahead. What do I say to the bride? Would she not want me to mention her mum as I didn't know her. Don't want to upset any more than she will be already but don't want to completely ignore the fact that her mother has just died.

I don't think it matters that you didn't know her personally - you can still say something along the lines of "I was so sorry to hear about your mother".

The poor girl must be so upset that even bringing the wedding forward wasn't soon enough for her mother to see her married

I hope that they managed to have a good time at their bittersweet day.

The wedding went well, thanks Pecka! Apart from a few shakey moments during the vows - the "in sickness and in health" bit, especially, everyone was really brave. Think the bride and groom enjoyed themselves though the bride's father looked very lost without his wife. In the end I didn't say anything to the Bride about her mum's death. Didn't seem right as most seemed to be avoiding the subject. Told her later though that I thought she was really brave and just left it at that.

Yes, I suppose the only comfort is that their mothers would have wanted them to have been happy on their big day. I think everyone concerned was too preoccupied with the wedding to dwell too much on any other emotions. Think it will hit them once they are back from their honeymoon this week. Such a shame cos they really are a lovely couple.
