Any advice on a blighted twin?

I am about 8 weeks pg.

I had a scan on tuesday which revealed a healthy pregnancy and a blighted twin. The twin does not appear to be healthy. The sac has collapsed and no heartbeat seen. I have had several shows of brown stringy d/c and have slight tummy pain.
Has anyone been thru this...
I am trying to find out what to expect in the next few days/weeks?

Hi Oinker,

I thought you had m/c'd as you left the Dec thread. Glad you are still pg, but sorry about the loss of one twin Sad Sad

I'm waiting to m/c at the minute - had a scan which indicated no heartbeat at the EPU yesterday.

Can't give you any advise on your thread, but just wanted to say hi and wish you all the best. xx

I know one of the mums at DD's school lost a twin. Not sure of the exact circumstances but she did mention to me that her DD had had a twin that she had mc.

I had someting similar
\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1367&threadid=91604&stamp=050809212520\here}
last year, first scan showed viable twins, two weeks later only one heart beat.
Had a healthy baby earlier this year. Nothing actually "happened" and if I had not had a scan at 7 weeks probably would not have found out. Apparently its quite common - not sure how I would have coped with twins - and lots of mixed emotions between first scan and second.
hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly

I was/am convinced that I had vanishing twin syndrome with ds. I gained weight really quickly and was showing at 8 weeks! I looked at least a month pregnant and at my 10 week check-up they argued with me saying I was at least 14-16 weeks gone. I did have some brownish discharge and some discomfort at about 7 weeks and 2 episodes of very light, bright red spotting over the next week or two. By the time we did the ultrasound at 12 weeks there was only one baby but I really just expected in my heart to see two and was shocked at the singleton. So, I will never know for sure.

A good friend of mine had this two and says she would have never known it was twins if they had not done an initial scan at 6 weeks.

had this "too"

This seems very common I think.
A good friend of mine had an early scan at 6 weeks (due to recurrent m/cs) and found she was carrying twins. At 8 weeks she had some spotting and at a scan they found that one of the twins' heartbeats had stopped (a blighted twin as you say). She was scanned quite often in the next few weeks and the twin never miscarried (she didn't bleed more than some light spotting) but it kind of disappeared - she and her doctor believe it was reabsorbed into her body.
Sorry if this is TMI but you did ask ....
She is now 18 weeks pregnant (in the same pregnancy) and it is all going really well ...
She was very sad about the lost twin but also she admitted to being a little relieved and desperate to keep going with the one still there ...
HTH

Ghosty...
No amount of info is too much.
I am so pleased you guys are sharing all this with me. I feel loads better.
I will worry regardless thru any p/g as I have had 5 m/c, 6 including the twin. I have never had a viable p/g or even seen a heart beat so this is all very new to me.
My worries will continue throughout, but reading stuff like this is reassuring and keeps me hopeful.

I will be scanned every tuesday until my 12 weeks and then every 2 weeks. So i literally just have to get thru one week at a time b 4 being reassured with a scan.
THANKYOU

Hi there,
I had heavy bleeding in week 8 of my pregnancy and was told at my scan that I had lost 1 twin.
On Christmas eve (week9) I had to go to hospital in an ambulance being of very heavy bleeding. At scan I could see the collapsed second sac but still one heart beat. I am so scared to move and am ment to be going back to work next week. Can I get signed off sick if the hospital have told me to rest? Am so scared to move let alone go to work as a teacher.

When your baby arrives if they seem unsettled I would suggest cranio treatment. I lost a twin and mine suffered. Have to bath the kids now but will be back later if yoiu have any Q's.

TheMNPeacekeepingForce · 28/12/2007 18:23

This happened to me too - I had an empty second sac eventually spotted on ultrasound after weeks of bleeding on and off. Ds was born totally fine.
Nab - would love to hear more about the idea of cranial (ds is 2.5 now so only out of curiosity) and was def unsettled as a baby - cried a lot!!

p.s. one of the medical terms for this if you want to do more research on Google is Vanishing Twin. There is quite a lot of info on this out there.
