DD2 is 5mo and nearly always has clenched fists. another mum asked me if i was worried about it - well, i wasn't until she mentioned it! should i be? she will open them if you give her something to hold, or when she is feeding she opens them to 'pump'/stroke my breast but if she is just sitting/ lying aroud, they are clenched. she is an avid thumb sucker so has them clenched for this. they are not clenched when she sleeps.
so... should i worry?

My son sucks his thumb and at 5 months his fists were often clenched. I'd find things in them at bath time

At your next Health Visitor clinic mention it if worried, or give them a bell maybe, just in case. But my son did this. He's now 12 months and does it a lot less now.

thanks tea and cake. wouldn't have really fussed about it but once someone points something out...... I tend to avoid HV clinic like the plague but maybe i'll have to bite the bullet and pop along!

I wouldn't worry - she obviously can open them if she wants, so it's probably just a habit she hasn't changed from the womb. She'll open them quick enough when she wants to grab something!

thanks octavia, you're probably right. i hate other mums hassling me about my daughter's development!!

I think 5 months is too young to be worried about this. My dd is still doing it at 2.5 years (at times) and only now is it being seen as a bit of an issue!

If she couldn't open them at all or wasn't able to grasp toys then get it checked out but sounds normal to me!

My dd is 18mths and still clenches her fists a lot of the time... it doesnt worry me if she couldnt open them or hold things then i would be worried and i know if it was a problem it would have been picked up by now by one of the numerous specialists she is already under for various health problems so try not to worry xxx

Nah, my 11 month-old had her "dukes" up constantly at around 5 months and you;d never know now. The only downside is that on every photo from around that time, she looked like she'd deck you as soon as look at you!

My son did this and we went to the Dr who sent us to a paed....all normal and fine and a few months after we went (at 6 months) he stopped doing it.
a few visits to an cranial osteopath and all good.
He is now a totally normal 18 month old sweetie!!

My DD is just coming up for 5 months and she too always has her hand clenched! I'm not worried about it at all as my older two DC were the same and now at 9 and 11 years they are both fine
