How do I put a brake (hoho?) on my DS Cars obsession? Please give me advice - I am about to hurl Lightening McQueen out of the window.

DS (Age2) started off with enjoying the film Cars.

Now he has to:
-Sleep with Lightening McQueen in his hand.
-Go everywhere with L McQ and one other car in his hands. It make trying to ride a scooter or do anything bloody impossible.
-Whines if the movie Cars is not the TV programme on. My poor DD is sick to death of seeing it. (I don't always give in, but honestly, the whining can carry on for over an hour and my head feels like exploding!)

  • Now has been given Cars clothing for Xmas and insists on wearing it.

I can't believe I have let what seemed like a cute hobby rule our lives. It causes about 5 altercations a day. In fact, I would say him losing L McQ several times a day is the cause of most of his tears. He is OBSESSED!!

I know I should strap on a pair and not give in, but it has been a difficult last few weeks as we are about to emigrate so it has been easier to give in.
But...should we cold turkey him when we emigrate and just get rid of the sodding things? What have you done about your DCs obsessions?

My DS2 (2.3) is mad about cars in geenral but also like Cars. He sleeps with about 5 (as many as he can carry!) and would prefer these to cuddle than a teddy. DS1 liked Bob vehicles and Tractor Tom stuff and I remember having to buy loads of bloody tractor toms becasue they would get lost. He didn't sleep with them though!

maxybrown · 04/01/2010 16:08

My Ds loves cars but toy story - phew! That was on all day it felt like. Now he will not go near it lol

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 04/01/2010 17:17

well I could tell you that DS1 was obsessed with cars (in general - not just the movie) as a non-walking non-talking baby..........there's no sign of the obsession abating, if anything it's worse now - and he's 9

But that wouldn't really help - as others have said it's a phase and it'll pass (usually )

RainRainGoAway · 04/01/2010 18:23

AAAArrgh Awassailing!
That didn't help at all! Farkin' Lightning McQueen for the next 7 years.
I think I may flood him instead and hope that Cars overdose may just fix the obsession.

well as I said - thankfully it was all types of cars - so not any one type - but - yes he's still absolutely nuts about 4 wheeled vehicles

MrsWillis · 04/01/2010 19:11

Do you have my DS??? We too are going through a Lightning McQueen phase. It started just before his 2nd birthday so everyone bought him Cars stuff and we have so much! He used to watch the DVD 4 times a day if I let him - very rarely!

I have to say though he is now 2.6 and although he still takes them to bed with him - Lightning, Sally, Doc, Luigi, Guido and Filmore - he is starting to watch it less and less and doesn't play with the toys half as much as before.
In fact I can't remember the last time we watched the film.

The cars do have a habit of going missing though don't they. DS has a blue Lightning done in the Dinoco colours and he is forever asking for it.

RainRainGoAway · 04/01/2010 19:18

Mrs Willis - we have 2 racing L McQ, 3 snazzy red ones, one with 'mud' on the tyres, and 2 Dinaco blue ones in the house currently.
Today was a classic, he took 3 McQueens to my friends little boys house. The little boy had a blue McQ and my DS wanted it in the worst way. We ended up for 30 mins trying to remove it, pacify him, pacify the other boy, distract etc. Great fun !!

And no, the fact he still had 3 McQ on hand did not mollify him. And not intersted in any of the other toys.

It makes my DD Barbie phase seem positively lovely!

I have some LMQ curtains and single duvet set if you want them?

maxybrown · 04/01/2010 19:39

Ooh Ds would love L Mc duvet cover he loves cars all round. We are on 2nd watching tonight thing is, DH and I love it too

RainRainGoAway · 04/01/2010 19:49

Disenchanted - that is so kind! It shows that an obsession can be grown out of (pretty please say that is why you are able to give them away is that your DS can no longer stand the sight of Cars!)

But - off to foreign climes in a weeks so the postage will be astronomical. It sounds as though Maxys DH would love the single duvet though.

my DS (now 3.5) has loved Cars and LM since he was about 2 but recently the obsession has peaked with it being the only dvd he will watch and the only games he will play and the clothes he will wear. Just roll with it, and maybe introduce a rule about when DVDs can be watched and how you have to take turns with your DD?

Stinkyfeet · 04/01/2010 20:01

Ds2 is 3.10, also Lightning obsessed. 2 new playsets this Christmas. It's been going on since at least last Christmas, as he got clothes and other Cars stuff then.

We listen to the whole soundtrack in the car - Route 66 is his fave! He doesn't watch the film so much now, but plays races and tractor tipping on the XBox.

So not sure how long the obsession will last - new merchandise comes out all the time so this could run and run!

RainRainGoAway · 04/01/2010 20:16

My God - its like visual heroin for toddlers by the sound of it. Damn Disney.

OP posts:
Stinkyfeet · 04/01/2010 20:19

Still, look on the bright side - it's got to be better than all the pink and fluffiness that is Disney Princess ... Thank God for boys!

PussinJimmyChoos · 04/01/2010 20:23

DS - 3.5yrs is the same! He always has to take a toy car to bed or have one in his hand - he's been like this for ages but I just let him get on with it because he will put them away for nursery or if he's doing something in the park, he will understand that he can climb better without his car in his hand - although it took a while!

BIL and SIL very kindly bought him a Pit Stop Mac so his latest thing is 'fixing' L McQ and making glug glug sounds as he refuels...

I just think well when they are all grown up we will look back at these years and give anything to have them back again, so lets enjoy them while we can - even if it does mean seeing the same film over and over again!

PussinJimmyChoos · 04/01/2010 20:24

PS

Dare I mention I've seen adverts for something called Cars Toon in the Disney Shop and Toy Story Three out this year!!

Stinkyfeet · 04/01/2010 20:28

Yes, I've heard tell of a Cars sequel ...

PussinJimmyChoos · 04/01/2010 20:37

I've just googled it and it seems to be a series on the Disney channel...mm not an issue for us then cos we don't the Disney Channel!

maxybrown · 04/01/2010 20:49

OOh is there?!! lol.....lol at my DH loving the duvet set.......yes prob

The toy box in our living room is devoted entirely to cars............LOADS!!! All sorts. We have only just got onto the Disney obsession. We got him the disney world of cars book for Christmas. His speech is very poor but he drives me mad, grabbing my hand and pointing at every vehicle........groan

MrsWillis · 04/01/2010 23:21

They have the Cars Toons on here

I made the mistake of showing them to DS and now hangs off me when I am trying to MN work shouting 'Cars, Mummy!'

He watched Wall-e tonight though and looks like he likes that too.

The Cars sequel will be out in 2011 apparently.

Nevergoogle · 04/01/2010 23:25

FGS, doesn't this child have pockets?

RainRainGoAway · 05/01/2010 13:34

Nevergoogle!

I know, it is the sort of situation that I go 'FFS woman, how could you let your child live on a diet of hula hoops and pears. How the hell did you let it get that bad!'

But - he has tried the pocket thing. Then, every 2 mins will stop, check McQueen is in the pocket, move on, remove McQ, replace him, stop, rearrange again...ad infinitum.

I also got a little backpack to try and remove them as well that way. Same thing. Stops, opens bag, checks the cars are safe, zip up, stop, check...

Nevergoogle · 05/01/2010 17:25

oh ok, the hula hoops and pears hits my sympathy nerve as i have fussy eaters

Hmm, will try to think of something more productive.

SpeedyGonzalez · 05/01/2010 23:23

Nevergoogle! Hiya!!!

It's me, the namechanging, disingenuous custard hater!

Nevergoogle · 06/01/2010 08:18

I know Speedy. How are those hormones?
