Is it dangerous to use a cot for a two year old (rather than a bed)?

DD is 23 months, still in a cot.

My mum is telling me I must move her to a bed asap. She says leaving her in a cot is dangerous cos one day she'll try to climb out and fall and hurt herself.

She reckons it's best to preempt this inevitability by moving her to a bed now.

IS she talking sense (she has had 4 kids so should know what's she's talking about)?

I don't really want to move her to a bed until I really have to.

My Ds2 is 20 months old (born 2 months early so should onl be 18 month old) and we have had to move him into a bed a few weeks back, as he was able to climb out and hit his head...

We put dd1 in a bed after she'd climbed out of her cot at mils. pil live in a bungalow, we put her to bed, went into the living room, 5 secs later she burst into the room wailing in shock after climbing out of the cot! Luckily the cot was next to a bed in the guest room so she landed on that, single bed ordered from Argos pretty soon after.

dd2 is 27 months and showing no inclination to climb out so we're in no rush.

DS1 was 3.4 before we moved him to a bed to be fair though we asked him loads of times if he wanted a big boys bed but he kept saying no! I am also a big fan of if it ain't broke don't fix it
