Not useful for a 4 month old but those of you with older children (over age 1) I did find those aquadraw mini mats were fab (the ones that come in Teletubbies, Thomas the Tank engine, Princesses and Bob the builder). You get a pen that you fill with just a few drops of water and then they can 'colour in' the pictures (they are white when dry but magically appear when wet). They fit into the front of hand luggage easily and we also used them on coach excursions. He also took some of those 'Crayola Beginnings' crayons and a cheap drawing pad and he used them in his pushchair while waiting to board (on the way back we were delayed in the departure lounge for 2 hours - thank goodness we had brought stuff to keep him busy!). He was 17 months and had only taken a few steps before so the pushchair was a must.
Also, one thing I only realised at the last minute is that you don't necessarily need to bring the most minimalist pushchair on holiday - we brought his usual 'big' one (Bebe Confort Loola set to rearfacing and it was fine). I'm glad I did as he used it for naps while we were travelling and also on holiday - he won't nap in his other pushchair. They still let us keep it up to the gate and we picked it up from baggage claim when we got off but they dropped it off first as it was one of the last things they loaded on iyswim.

Have a good flight!
