I keep reading online development things, of what they should be doing. my 8 month old is sitting but making no attempt to move (crawl bum shuffle etc) plus have looked after my friends little girl today who is a week younger and she is rolling about and going into crawl position(not going anywhere) I just feel really worried and I keep encouraging him to go on his belly but he just cries. when he was younger he used to roll from belly to back, but now wont even do that. In every other way he is happy healthy and talking(?) to me. He is clapping and doing everything else intellectually a 8 month should be, but really worried about not rolling and moving about.

We do lots of things swimming once a week, baby club(sure start run so, lots of thing to see touch and do) baby yoga, and even been to baby ballet, music class ( singing at library)

Is there anything I can do to encourage movement?

Similar to Mamadiva and char char

ds never rolled, crab crawled at 11 months walked at 13 months

dd went straight from sitting up to walking at 14 months

My ds didn't crawl until he was 10m, he wasn't even trying to crawl and one day he just got up and was off. My friends dd was crawling before my ds and she's 4 months younger than him.
I really wouldn't worry about it, some babies skip crawling altogether and you might find he just stands up one day and walks instead.
I was told at my ds's 8 month check that he should be crawling, pulling himself up on furniture and cruising, he couldn't do any of it.

LBB i think that is what has set me off worrying as the hv said he should be trying to stand and cruising at his 8 month check. I didnt really say much in response just mummbled at her that he's trying (which is a complete lie!)

Thanks i feel alot better, i should be grateful that when i put the xmas tree up he wont be trying to pull it over!!

I worried too after 8 month check, called my dp straight nearly in tears (blardy h/v's).
Ds started walking at 14m, and after so lng of waiting for him to move, I now want him to justy sit down!!

I don't even bother with h/v's anymore, 8/9m might be the average but we come back to each baby being different and as your h/v doesn't know your baby..........
You'd know if there were any major problems to worry about.

hannah - your HV is talking bollocks if she reckons babies should be cruising at 8 months. 8 months is way too early. the online developmental stuff can be bollocks too - the babycentre ones in particular I found to be on the advanced side.

Ah, please don't worry. Easier said than done, I know. I was tearing my hair out when ds was that age as he refused to do any of the rolling, preparing to crawl stuff. I can remember being in tears after one of those blasted baby gym classes where all the other babies were crawling around and he just sat there like a log pointing at the equipment he wanted to play on.

He pulled himself up at around 10 months and 2 weeks later was walking. Never crawled, bum shuffled or anything of the like.
They really do develop at different rates, and your little one will do what he wants - when he wants. They all do!
