Worried about my 12 month old’s communication and development

Hi just looking for some reassurance really.

Our LO is 12mo, he started crawling maybe a week ago and has never been the best with rolling. He will smile at people he is familiar with and is generally happy. He will sit and play around his friends but doesn’t really show an interest in them. He loves toys which spin or have wheels and is obsessed with opening cupboards. However, he does not wave, clap or play peekaboo. He does not babble mamama etc. he just makes grunting sounds and he doesn’t have teeth yet. I am really worried about his communication and lots of this points to ASD. However I’m just wondering if any of you have LO’s who were maybe the same at this age, but have continued to meet their milestones and are “neurotypical”. I hate that word, but both my brothers have ASD and I’m just worried about my LO too.

Honestly at 12 months it's really impossible to say because the range of development at that age is so wide between each individual child. Have you had your 1 year development check with the health visitor? I would start there and contact them if you've not heard from them.

I think a lot of what you’ve said sounds fairly typical but I understand you being extra wary given that you have ASD in the family and it is genetic.

How does he score on this progress checker from Speech & Language UK?
