18-month-old very clingy at swimming lessons, cries when put down

I have an 18 month old and take her swimming once a week. We are in a small group of 6 other children, all around the same age. My child loves swimming but cries and gets so upset when I have to put her down to get in and out of the pool, and she also won’t go anywhere near the instructor, even after months of lessons. None of the other children are like this, they are all very independent and happy for the instructor to take them for a swim.

My other friends kids the same age are the same, aren’t clingy and quite happy to be left or go with someone else.

I know all kids are different but what I’m seeing is my child is very much different to all other kids I know.

Am I doing something wrong? She goes to nursery 4 days a week and loves it but we don’t really have any family help with childcare so she’s not very used to other people I suppose.
