Hi everyone,
Just looking for a bit of reassurance or to hear others’ experiences really. My little one is 17 months a not saying any words yet.
He’s amazing at communicating in other ways – lots of pointing, waving, cuddles, nodding and shaking his head, and will go and get what he wants himself. His understanding seems really strong too – if I say things like “put that in the bin”, “where are your shoes?” or “shall we go out?” he understands and responds straight away.
Physically he’s very capable – running, walking, great fine motor skills, very busy little toddler!
In terms of speech, he babbles but maybe was a little slower to start with that. He very occasionally says “mama”, but it’s not consistent, and when we try to encourage him to repeat words he doesn’t really manage it yet. He sometimes tries, but doesn’t quite get there.
He’s my second, and I think that’s what’s making me question it more – my first definitely had a few words by this stage (like mama, dada, dog’s name etc).
I’ve seen online that around 18 months they “should” have about 10–20 words, which has made me wonder if he’s a bit behind or still within the normal range.
I know all kids develop differently, but just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar position at this age? Did things just click later on?
Thanks so much 😊
