What do 3 year olds talk about with each other

I've been asking ds if he talks to the other kids at nursery and he says that if he asks questions they don't answer. I asked him what questions he asks and they are a bit obscure so that probably explains why.

What do typical 3 year olds talk about so I can suggest some things for him to talk to the others about a bit? I imagine they don't really have big conversations and he isn't really at that stage yet anyway but it'd be nice if he could have a bit more interaction than I suspect he is having.

He is only just coming up to 3 so a bit young but I don't want him to be unable to chat with other kids.

Can anyone suggest stuff for him to talk about to strike up little conversations about e.g. TV progs?

Mine talk about video games, cars, plotting mischief, tv, food, clothes - jsut general things that are important to three year olds! I have 3yo twin boys and they chatter all day. Their favourite topics atm are car models and mario kart.

'shooterlaters'(?),cars, Ben bleedin Ten. although he's never watched it, super heroes, rockets, 'missions'. They don't really chat, just talk alongside each other.

They discuss whatever happens to be their current obsession.

Dinosaurs.
Mr. Tumble.
Daddy's big willy.
Wanting a pet monkey.
Baby brother's funny, fat face.

They are all freakin' loons.

Listen closely at your own peril.

DS3 (3.6) talks about Becca his 'best girwl' and that he is going to marry her (tho his best girl is off to school in September - august baby - so DS will be most upset)

TBH I think they just talk a load of nonsense and in DS and best girls case encourage each other to cause mischief and giggle behaind their hands

DD proposed to her friend ,also 3 today. She said 'When you're a big man, will you be my husband?' He stuffed a chip in his mouth and replied'yes'.

DS1 gets things that have happened stuck in his head and talks about them a lot to everyone.

When I ask about nursery he always tells me that Cara is funny, Cara makes him laugh/that he made Cara laugh. I know he plays with the other children too but Cara seems to be his favourite friend at the moment - all the boys he was friends with have gone up to preschool before him.

This week he is mostly talking about poo and squashed snails btw

What do you mean, they dont talk at three??

They talk lots. At least mine does. He can start the morning, asking me " mummy, are you going to the gym today? Will I be in the creche? Can we have lunch after? I want to buy melon and mango in the shop"

He talks about Dalmations, what the story is about, he talks about films he see, and things he has played with. His brothers drawings and lego constructions. He talks about how he likes to ride his scooter really fast down hill, everything really!

Superheroes. That's all DS talks about (as well as the inventive stories). He wouldn't know exactly what a superhero is, but he does accompany his conversations with a mad dash forward one arm outstretched.

I fear he will be mocked in september.

mrshedge, don't worry - dd is 4 - developing a bit more now but typical 'conversation' over the last year (mainly one way):

hello mr poo-poo

I'm 4

I love you

bum bum

you're a worm

chips and jelly, sausages with ice cream, pizza with strawberries on top etc - hilarious....

onceinalifetime · 19/06/2008 22:24

should add, this is the between peers conversation, she actually manages much more sensible dialogue with me

mrshedge · 19/06/2008 23:02

Quint - it's more about what they say to each other....ds has conversations with me about all sorts (although far too much about rubbish and bins for my liking!) it's more that I was wondering what he might talk about with other kids.

I wish I knew . He doesnt have any friends his age. He has his older brother, his 13 year old cousin, and the friends of his older brother, and that is it. his conversations with them is along the same lines as he would talk with them.

He has been out of nursery since march and due back end of August. I will know then.
