Whole hand pointing? Is this a stage before finger pointing? 👆🏻

DS is 13 months old and has been ‘pointing’ for a few weeks - but never with his index finger. It’s only with his whole hand.

I can’t find much info about this online so wondered if this is typical or something a bit more unusual?

We do lots of modelling of pointing so he does know how it’s supposed to work!

Has anyone else’s child done this?

Yes, my son did this. I'd fold down the fingers leaving just his index finger and he soon got the idea.

Yeah it’s pretty normal. Best thing to do is demonstrate pointing - so when he does it with his whole hand then you point at the thing with your finger. Or when playing with him point to different toys etc. He’ll eventually start trying to do it the same way as you.

Normal. I've had three dc and nannied more and almost all of them did full hand pointing before finger pointing.

One of mine doesn't point with her index finger, she uses her second finger. Always had done and she's an adult so I suspect always will.

Thanks so much for the reassurance all. I don’t really have a village so don’t get to see many other babies!

Actually today I saw a couple of times where his index finger was very slightly starting to become isolated!

Just to update that in the last week or so we have really seen the emergence of index finger pointing! 👉🏻

Always the way isn’t it!
