3 yr old struggling with shoes/coats

Hi, my DC 2.11yr old really struggles with new big clothing items such as coats/shoes. They’re currently wearing cut out sandals that took them 4 weeks to try/accept. Mainly left them lying around for them to get used to. If I picked the sandals up to try and encourage them to wear them it was immediate tears , ‘no’, backing away/thrashing around. But now the weathers changing they’re not accepting proper shoes again. The weathers not too bad atm too heavily push it but there is going to come to a point where they will have to (and also accept wearing a coat/jumpers again). I don’t think it’s a sensory issue as they just react when they see the clothing, not through actually wearing it and then becoming upset. They also have a speech delay and limited expressive language so are not able to express what their distress is actually about. Also, I do try and involve them in choosing items but it doesn’t seem to make much difference. Anyone experience the same? anything that helped the process? Thanks

If they are quite rigid in what they’ll wear, have speech delay and also limited expressive language, has the HV referred them for a hearing test and some SaLT yet?

Sorry, I know they doesn’t help with the shoes and coat.

Ha, that’s ok. Yep hearing test was fine. They’re on the waiting list for NHS SALT but the waiting time in our area is ridiculously long so would be surprised if we’re seen before the end of the year. We did a private SALT assessment and report and I’m continuing to work with them on their communication until we’re able to be seen by the nhs - can’t afford ongoing private SALT unfortunately

Waiting lists are huge here too. It’s really not helpful at all.

Glad they’ve had some SaLT though.

Do you get a 3 year check with the HV where you are?

Don’t think so - the HV hasn’t been involved at all tbh. They’re at nursery though so they do their own assessment at that point.

Is your DC waiting for SALT as well?
