Spinning wheels of toy cars

Hi,
My Lo is 11 months old. She has recently started spinning wheels of toy cars. She will turn them upside down and spin wheels for a mintue or so. You can distract her from doing it and she won't get upset. She is simling, eye contact, babbling, pointing, social interaction, laughing, crawling, cruising, standing on her own for a mintue or so.just wondering should I be worried about this. Thanks 😊

Could she just be exploring the rotation schema at an early age? It has been observed from as young as 8 months.

The article explains what the Rotation Schema is and gives suggestions on other activities to try.

Mine particularly liked a long piece of track that we propped up at one end on the sofa so that when they put the cars at the top and let go the cars travelled down the track and across the room. DC2 liked being rolled across the floor and being wrapped in a blanket.

If you are worried though, has she had her 12 month check yet? If not, it might be worth also filling in the 12 month Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and seeing how she scores on that one too Smile

My grandson also did this, wheel obsessed, everything that could be would be turned over and ages spent spinning wheels, he is 18 months now and has stopped doing this.

Hi how’s your child now? My son plays same way

Jvd · 07/02/2026 19:37

How’s your baby now. Mine is doing the same thing.

I'm not the OP but my nephew was obsessed with spinning wheels at a similar age and older. He'd even turn prams over at playgroups just to spin the wheels.
He's now 5.5, definitely not autistic and doesn't spin wheels but does like motorbikes and monster trucks.

@jvddid you have a read of the article on the Rotation Schema? Do you think your LO may be exploring that? Do you have any other concerns apart from rotating wheels?

OLLY38 · 17/02/2026 19:33

Hi,
Sorry only seeing your message now. She is fine and has actually stopped spinning the wheels of a car. To be honest i cant remenber when she stopped. Im guessing it was just exploring or the rotation schema.
