How to encourage toddler to walk on his own

Anyone got any tips?

my toddler (2y5m) is a very capable walker and walks reasonable distances with his childminder.

with me, however, he’s a nightmare! He’ll either:

  • wander around doing his own thing in no particular direction. Running into people’s front gardens etc
OR
  • insist on being carried

Clearly it’s just an issue of control/discipline but has anyone had a similar, very stubborn toddler and found a quickish way to overcome this? Bribery?!

he potty-trained in 3 days so I feel like this shouldn’t be such a massive hurdle but it is!

Does the CM hold his hand or have reins?

I think if it’s just them, then she holds his hand. If she has more kids then she holds the littlest one’s hand and then the bigger kids hold hands with each other… he’s very well behaved… for her!

I do have reins but haven’t found them that useful. I guess they’re more for bolters? Mine is more like a stubborn sausage dog.
