Sudden fear of everything at 2ish

DS turned 2 in early July. In the past month or so he has become afraid of everything. Going into nursery he is now so clingy and he used to be fine. Used to be the noisy fearless kid and now he hates loud noises, other kids being noisy or shouting, getting involved in play groups and hates other kids using toys, hates any sirens or revving engines, the doorbell/knocking on door, cars beeping/honking, just instantly runs to me crying. He’s an active little boy with a really good vocabulary but none of my friends kids are like this and are all happily running round without a worry. He used to love soft play but now all the other noisy kids or whooshing noises and noise toys means he hates it and wants to leave.
When it happens I comfort him and tell him nothing will hurt him but not sure what else to do! Will this go away?
I can deal with the fussy eating and tantrums and toddler stuff but this feels like a total personality change from my normally fearless confident boy.

If it's new behaviour has the GP checked his ears to make sure there's no infection or inflammation? Other than that, could you get him some headphones for things like soft play?
