Letting kids out of your sight

When did you start letting your kids play out of your sight?

My son is 2.5. The kind of situations I'm talking about are e.g when we (parents) are sitting inside in a pub, and the older children of friends (age 7 or 8) want to take him outside to play in the garden, or
a similar situation in a park, where we're sitting in one area and they want to go and play in another.

At the moment, I always get up and go to and lurk around watching them so son is always in my sight but i get the feeling from the parents of the older kids I should just leave them to it. But the truth is I can't even imagine letting the 8 year old out of my sight and feeling comfortable. Maybe i've watched too many crime dramas but it just feels all too possible that you might go out to fetch them and they just be nowhere to be found.

Far too young to be out of your sight.
