The 'no' phase and how to handle it?

My DD has just turned 2 years old and has started saying no to everything along with a lovely tantrum!

It usually happens if I tell her not to do something or if I ask for something back that she's should t have. She just goes from zero to one hundred screaming no at me, which then results into a huge meltdown- kicking legs, smacking me, trying to bite.

I try to keep my cool (90% of the time) and explain why she can't do or have something, but she's still too little to reason with. I currently do time outs when she gets really bad which do help, and she does say sorry after and want lots of cuddles, but will do the exact same thing an hour later.

It really is frustrating and I don't want to snap and be shouty as all that does is leave me with horrendous mum guilt for upsetting her, so I am just wondering if anyone has any tips of how to ease toddler out of the no phase and also how to stop the smacking/ biting etc.

It's a really tough stage isn't it? I'm sure you've tried distraction? Has that helped at all?
