My 15 month old still isn’t saying any words or clapping

So my 15 month old did used to say mama and baba when he was around 7-8 months old but he stopped just before he turned 1 and he hasn’t said anything since. I sing to him, talk to him and I even clap and wave etc but he just doesn’t seem interested. I’m just so worried because I am friends with mums who have toddlers the same age and they are saying words and doing gestures etc. I’m just so worried he might have developmental issues and I really hope he doesn’t have autism because I know how hard that can be on parents.
I put ms Rachel on sometimes to see if that helps and see if it teaches him to do anything but it hasn’t. He loves watching it but it hasn’t helped. Is anyone in the same position or has been in the same position?
He definitely has loads of tantrums and that started just after he turned 1.

If he was talking and now isn't is your HV aware @Samantha1571 that he's losing skills?

Samantha1571 · 25/01/2024 21:14

I did mention it to the HV and she didn’t seem worried a few months back. She said that they concentrate on one thing. Either their motor skills or learning to say words/talk. That was when he just turned one and now he is 15 months old. I’m going to ring her up and talk to her because I am concerned

I think calling the HV is a good idea.

I would ask her to refer him for a Hearing Test and for SLT.

I'd also fill in the 16 month Ages & Stages and the 20 month Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and ask her to mark both of those together to give a clearer picture of whether DS needs some more support Flowers

Hi have you got any updates as my little girl is the same I’m also worried about development

CadyEastman · 15/02/2024 20:14

@Samantha1571 how are you both getting on now?

Samantha1571 · 18/02/2024 18:30

he is clapping now which is good. He says mama and baba again and he also passes things to me when I ask. The HV is aware and he has got his 16 month review next month so fingers crossed he will be doing a lot more by then

Hello @Samantha1571
Are u sure the mama and dada he used to say around 8 months was not just babbling? Anyway try not to worry too much. My DS started to say his first words around 15 months or later, word explosion arrived around 18 months and now with two speaks in sentences. My friends son was saying his first words around 12 months and now has a smaller vocabulary than my son. Maybe I am wrong but I think worrying about expressive speech before 18 months is too early.

We aren’t worried now to be honest. He is doing a lot more than he was. I’m not worried that he isn’t walking either because I know he will get there at some point ☺️
