How can I stop my children competing over me all the time

5yr old and 4yr old. They generally get in well together and enjoy imagination games together. There are some points in our day to day where they are in such competition with each other over me. Eg fight over who sits next to me on the sofa, who sits behind me in the car, who sits next to me at dinner. It's never ending and so exhausting. Any tips for dealing with this?

Have you tried turn taking? Alternate every time who gets to choose where they sit?

Do you make a point of giving the child who isn't right next to you, special attention every time, so they don't feel separate from you despite not being right next to you? And verbally expressing that using lots of "we" "both" "all together" type language?
