Hey

just curious as to what other 16mo are like

what do they play with/how do they play
how do you spend your days
do they eat and sleep well
how are they with other children
milestones
do they know colours / words etc

i have a lovely 16 almost 17mo DS
he’s seems to be doing well in most ways but I have worries about some stuff but I’m sure most of the things he do are normal toddler behaviours I’m a FTM

What sort of things are you concerned about @Gingerthecat? Xmas Wink

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto

he has a massive list of positives.

very happy , funny little boy ,sleeps ok eats okish
shares interests with me , bring over toys , books mostly just random items that he finds interesting. Iv lost count of how many words he say now he’s seems to understand most things I say.

but he does some odd things IMO

he hits a LOT smacks me , his dad my mum we first started to just ignore him but it got too much so we started to tell him to stop or tell him no firmly but then he started hitting his self when we did tell him no and it upsets me every time he do it but I’m trying my hardest to just not play into it or make a fuss over it hoping that he just stops / get bored of it

he’s also started crossing his fingers over each other like lapping one over the other could be just something new he’s learnt but looks strange

he walks flat on his feet but he doesn’t stand still like he constantly step step step or rocks back on his heels but he walks normally if that makes sense .

pointing … he points has done since 15mo but he doesn’t point a great deal several times a day but that’s it

used to flap hands loads but doesn’t anymore

also had a love and still does slightly for spinning car wheels lol but he will also play with them correctly as in pushing them along the floor

gosh sorry that’s a long post!

I think what you're trying to ask if those things are normal or they may be signs of ASD?

As for the hitting, both of mine had massive improvements in their temper once they could communicate better. Have you tried using some basic signs with him like yes, no, more and milk? Also don't ever explain. A simple no and done distraction is enough at 16 months.

Have a read of 14 ways to stop hitting and biting too.

And if you are worried about his development, you could fill in and score the 16 month Ages & Stages. Scoring in the grey in a coupe of areas is pretty normal anymore than that and I'd book in to see your HV and ask her to do the 18 month Social and Emotional Ages & Stages.

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto

well yes I wasn’t sure if these are just normal toddler quirks as I know they can do some odd things at times and anything you type in google ALWAYS comes back as ASD literally a child can’t do anything without google or someone saying it’s ASD

il definitely have a read of the hitting thing I think distraction seems to be the working the best at the moment.

im not overly worried about his development as he seems to be doing well i did get the 18months ages and stages questionnaire offline and he passed it will flying colours on all areas and he’s not even 18mo yet there was only a couple I marked as sometimes and one not yet for a drawing with a pen or something like that.

im just concerned about his quirks as it seems he has a few and the hitting is a big one for me that really bothers me!

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto

ahhh right I just done that 18mo social and emotional stages questionnaire you added and he’s seems to pass that with ease , literally said sometimes to a couple and the rest where all as they should be so that’s good thanks for that!
