Hi all,

My little boy who is 8 months old is pretty much falling off the growth charts and classified as failure to thrive faltering growth whatever you want to call it. His weight gain has been very slow since birth. I think at one point he only gained 70g in two months! The Hv advised high calorie diet and early weaning since 5 months so I have been trying like crazy to encourage him to eat but HE IS JUST NOT THAT INTERESTED. Don't get me wrong he will try something play around with it squish it with his hands but he doesn't consume much at all AND when he does actually open his mouth for food it's only 3 small baby spoonfuls until he is full. He is EBF won't take a bottle so no hope there.

The point is - what on earth am I meant to do? Is it just that he has a small appetite and will steadily make his way in his own time OR do I have a serious problem here? He is small but alert and active so I just don't know.

Please come and share your stories with me and make me feel better before I completely loose my mind :(

Thanks

Your health visitor doesn't sound like seems following the NHS pathway or explaining the correct procedure. Our son was born between the 9 and 25 centiles and rapidly dropped below 0.4th. Based on his birth centile, they had to place him on the NHS weight gain pathway if he either fell below two centiles or fell below the 0.4th centile (and our son did both). He was only 2mo and only putting on 50g a week, so the first step was to be admitted to children's ward for 3 days of feeding observations. There were no feeding problems, so we were prescribed high calorie formula (for topups. I was breastfeeding). Once we finally got him to take the bottle it improved gradually, but he still needed weekly weigh-ins and stayed on the special formula till he was 18mo. Happy to answer any more questions you might have!

Which weight centile did he start on @scrabbledabbl and which one is he on now?
