3 (almost 4 year old!) boy hates having his hair cut

Hello,

I’m looking for advice.

my son absolutely hates having his haircut. We’ve tried the barbers a few times and it ends in disaster and recently I’ve tried doing it at home but that’s a task in itself and can quite literally take hours.

he has my hair so it grows really quickly and grows really thick as well.

the last time I did it would be a few months ago and it does need doing again now really as its going in his eyes and ears. His nursery also have an outbreak of head lice and I just think he’s hair being shorter and not as thick will be easier to manage and treat if he catches them.

Any advice on how to overcome this with him or shall I just keep going? I try to make it as peaceful as possible at home by putting the TV on, snacks & favourite toys available and I take it at his own pace. There’s always the promise that if he lets me when we are done we can go to the shop for a treat (new toy usually).

any advice or your own experiences please share them!!

I had the same problem for a long long time…and tbh still isn’t an amazing experience!
things that have helped:
lots of role play - he has a kids haircut set and we practise on each other
watching daddy, grandad, me go to hairdressers
special treats after - big ice creams, chocolate, toys
the main thing tho is to find child friendly salons…with toys, crazy wallpapers, game machines, pool table, etc etc
i actually am going to try to go today and can’t say I am looking forward to it!! BUT it is better than it was…good luck xx

I purchased a book from Amazon called "going for a haircut". It has real life pictures and it helped my ds. He still moans but at least he isn't screaming as if he's being tortured. I appreciate this might not work for you and its £8 but it did help my ds and I was desperate to try anything as getting a haircut was so stressful for all of us. Maybe have a look at the reviews before purchasing. I also got the doctor one as he was so frightened after getting his 3.4 yo jabs but after reading the book, he allows himself to be examined without screaming the place down.

Oh I couldn’t find a book - sounds great- but I had to get a dentist/tooth brushing which also helped! I did watch what ever show we could too! Various options on CBeebies x

could you trim a bit while he is asleep - not sure if that’s possible?

my 12 year old has autism and hates having his nails cut - so I secretly cut then while he is in a deep sleep!
