sons speech delay impacting my mental health :(

i am so terribly worried about my DS. 13 months now, no words and very little in the way of babbling.
HV has scheduled a hearing test.
he does make gestures and understand some of what I'm saying. Doesn't really tick any boxes for autism so not concerned about that.
but keep reading dreadful things about babies who have delayed speech who then go on to have trouble in reading, spelling, self esteem and so on which I find so upsetting. I can't stop thinking about it and it's really getting me down :(
has anyone else had this? will he be ok?

@Mumof3bb1 how does he do on this simple 12 month progress checkerr*?

Mumof3bb1 · 21/09/2024 13:04

Hi @PritiPatelsMaker

i answered yes to most of the questions and it’s come back with the following:

Thanks for using our progress checker.
From your answers, it may be that your baby needs more support with social communication.

Ok so you can book an appointment with one of their SLTs and it's free.

Given that it says that he does need some support though, I'd phone the HV on Monday and tell her what the progress checker said. Speech & Language UK are a very well respected charity so she should be aware of them and their progress checkers and take it seriously.

I'd ask for a referral for a hearing test as Glue Ear can cause some speech delay.

I'd also ask for a referral to SLT too.

Before you do see her I'd fill in the 12 month Ages & Stages and also the 12 month Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and ask your HV to score both of them together Flowers

He passes both @PritiPatelsMaker of those assessments, scored 15 on the social and emotional one

That's good. It might not be anything that won't sort itself out quickly then but I'd definitely still ask for the hearing test and SLT.
