How to help 5yr old to play with others

My DS has a big imagination and when he plays likes everything to go his way and has very specific ideas on how the playing should be acted out which sometimes works if another child is happy to go along with his narrative but he often plays on his own at school during play time and seems happy to do so but maybe he would be happier if he could connect better with others?

I sometimes arrange play dates which are hit and miss. He often gets invited to birthday parties so I’m hoping he gets along with his peers to some extent.

Does anyone have a DC in a similar position and can offer some suggestions on how to help him play with others more?

What kind of things do year 1 children tend to play at play time? Maybe playing some popular schoolyard games at home would get him interested in joining in at school (if that’s what he wants!).

Thanks!

DS was football through Y1 to Y6. Unfortunately if they don't like football they can get a bit left behind the other boys.

Has the Teacher got any suggestions on how to help him socially or any observations that they've shared?

@PritiPatelsMaker
The teacher just said he always seems happy and they encourage him to buddy up with other children when they go outside.

He doesn’t seem overly interested in football but will suggest it in the garden more when it gets warmer.
