5yo telling fibs and stole today

Just that really. Low level fibs like saying she’s not had candy when she has etc.
My DH and I have been trying to impress the importance of being truthful and encouraging not shaming her into making better choices. She’s very bright and definitely knows better but we acknowledge that she’s a bit spoiled and we are taking steps to rein that in.
After school today though, her and I were at the shops. She mindlessly asked for this little hand sanitiser key ring. She’s got a couple that are similar so I said no and explained why. Thought no more about it. Until my husband has just appeared and said “Oh, DD gave me a surprise when you came home tonight”, lo and behold it was the key ring. I’m just asking for some advice on how to nip this in the bud. She’s got a book fair at school tomorrow and we were going together at pick up - would it be reasonable to say she can’t have the book money now as we need to go back to the shop and pay for the key ring? Please don’t shame me, I’m genuinely asking for suggestions on how best to deal with this and appreciate other perspectives

That's so difficult. I've got experience of DD fibbing from a young age but not stealing. I'm a bit thrown about how you deal with a shoplifting 5 yo if I'm honest, as you are probably struggling too.

Hopefully, someone will be along soon.
