9yr old DS sulky and so set in his interests

Just looking for some advice on my 9 uear old. He is sulky for no apparent reason. So mean to his younger sibling (constantly undermining and criticising him, rolling his eyes)
The only time he seems vaguely enthusiastic is when he's talking about his (rather niche) interests and even then if anyone tries to enter a conversation about it we are talked to as if we're slightly stupid.
It's so hard as at school he is apparently a lovely child and helpful and kind (which I know he is deep down - he can be just absolutely gorgeous and his peers seem to live him. Adults too. Though I wonder if eventually people will lose patiemce with him as they age...
How do I bring the lovely side out of him and also open his eyes to the world beyond his specific v fact-driven interests. Its making trying new things and doing different things as a family more and more difficult but the world can't revolve around him.
I often wonder if there are additional challenges going on - but not sure.
Any advice?
