Babies on the 90+ centile - your experiences

My 6 wk bf baby is mahoosive. He currently weighs 13lbs 6. Neither me or his dad are particulary tall or large. He is happy and healthy so I am not complaining but I wondered if his growth will slow down? Any similar experiences? His size was brought home to me yesterday when I went to the first post-natal group and he dwarfed all the other babies, some of whom were much older than him!

dd1 wqs always on the 90th centile. She's now 15 and is very petite and slender.

sarahloumadam · 10/01/2008 12:11

Thanks Needacoffee. Whilst I am grateful that he is thriving, constant comments about his size have started to worry me! Also my back is killing me !

Ds was hey-uge too (98th centile) and this one (am due in a couple of weeks) is the same too apparenlty. Dh is 6'2" but that's about it, neither of us are big built. Am still told ds is big for his age. He is 3.2 but am routinely asked "isn't he at school today?"

When I get any comments I just say, "oh his dad is big" which, as I say, isn't the case, but it shuts them up!

needmorecoffee · 10/01/2008 12:18

in my experience, breastfed babies put on weight quickly and then taper out. But thats on apoll of 3 (number 3 was bottlefed due to brain damage and is very tiny. At 4 she is 20 pounds)

sarahloumadam · 10/01/2008 12:19

Stupid charts make you worry I think. Good luck with the new baby, how exciting! Have you had a good pregnancy?

x-posts. Yes needmorecoffe I heard that breast-fed babies put on weight more quickly so interesting that your experience backs that up. He is a 2hrly feeder. Of course this all fits nicely with my FIL's theory that I am over-feeding him !

My ds was on the 90th centile for height and weight but at 2.8 has now dropped to 75th. My Ds also looks older than he is.

If hes hurting your back now wait 'til he's older. I need a crane to lift mine.

ELF1981 · 10/01/2008 12:28

my dd was born in the 90+ ranges, she steadily dropped down the lines. Cannot remember what she fell to, possibly around the 50th 60th? She now two and three months and weighs 27lbs

ELF1981 · 10/01/2008 12:33

Just searched my mumsnet posts, and DD was born on the 95% line and dropped to the 25% by 10 months - what a memory I have

Nip · 10/01/2008 12:35

My DS was born 7lb 15 and grew and grew and was constantly 90+ centile. He's not fat, but he's tall just like his dad. He towers over older children and he's only 21mo

Thanks everyone! Lets hear it for the bruisers!

lol staryeyed, my upper arms are v.toned

fiofio re your ds, kids are v.cruel.

Think DS is on track to double his weight by 10 weeks Starlight - what a silly HV, how can a bf baby go on a diet?! My HV has been v.reassuring but it is still nice to hear it from those who have been there and done it.

My son has always been on the 91st-98th centile. He was 10lbs 2 oz at birth, a bonny baby (not fat, though) and has always been very big and long for his age. Now, at 3 yrs, he is very tall for his age, but skinny, and still above 90th centile. He is a picky eater, and always has been (although loved his milk as a bubba) so it is definitely a genetic thing. Me and DH both around 6 feet tall, so possibly that has something to with it, although neither of us were big babies.

Ds1 was only 6lb8 at birth but now at a year he is 28lbs!!!! and on the 91st centile, but his dad is 6'5 so I don't think any of mine are destined to be small

He is still Breastfed and just keeps getting bigger

WillyWonka · 10/01/2008 13:04

Dd1 was 75th centile at birth but soon reached the dizzying heights of 91st-98th centiles. At 6mo she was bigger than a friend's "normal" sized 1yo and she'd become a right little porker until she started crawling when it just seemed to burn off with all her extra activity.

She's now 5yo, tall for her age (though by no means head & shoulders above her friends), quite slender and very healthy.

sarahloumadam · 10/01/2008 13:04

We are a family of short-arses though so not sure where he has come from!

Is your postman 6'2" slm?

Bensonbluebird · 10/01/2008 13:11

Mine were both average weight at birth, but up above the 98th for height. Both then went quickly up the centiles for weight DS1 to the 75th and DS2 to the 90th then dropped back to average DS1 by the ave of 18months DS2 by 8 months. DS1 is still at about the 98th for height at 3 and DS2 is off the scale at 8 months. I guess they are just going to be tall and skinny. I'm only 1m 62 and DP is 1m 80 so hardly giants. I think it is pretty normal for BF babies to put on weight quickly and then drop back.

meglet · 10/01/2008 13:21

sarahlou I was breastfed and mum said I put on massive amounts of weight, same with my lil sis. We are both skinny adults though.

I wouldn't worry if I were you, particularly as you are bf, obviously some very potent stuff you have there! You will have fab arm muscles soon .

Habbibu · 10/01/2008 13:31

DD was 10lb 11oz at birth - stayed on 99.6th centile for height, weight, head circ until about 12-13 months, when her weight started to plateau. She was exclusively breastfed to 6 months, and then weaned doing BLW. You'll hear lots of nonsense about needing to wean early with a big baby. Nod, smile, and continue as you planned...

When they get to six months you can use a hip seat, which I found really helpful for my back. Have to say I think my huge gorgeous girl is fab! Her dad is 6'3, and I come from a family of big babies, but I didn't expect her to be quite so huge...

coppertop · 10/01/2008 13:32

Ds1 was a big baby. At 6mths he looked like an 18mth old. When he was around 2.5yrs old I was stopped by the truancy officer who was doing random checks in town and asked why ds1 wasn't at school. Ds1 is now 7yrs old. He is still tall for his age but is by no means the tallest in his class. He is now something like 75th for height and 25th for weight.

Ds2 was also a big baby but was chubby rather than long. He's now 4yrs old and is an average size for his age.

cornsilk · 10/01/2008 13:35

My ds2 has been 90+ from a few weeks after birth. (Came a bit early and rapidly chunked up.) I worried when he was younger that he'd be too big, now that he's 6 he's tall, but has slimmed down and is in good proportion. He will be tall, probably not skinny, just right!
