Can my baby learn to crawl just from sitting, without tummy time?

DC1 is 8 months old and has always HATED tummy time. She just squeals and doesn’t do anything. Despite this, her head and neck have always been strong, and when we stand her up she takes her own weight for a long time. HV and doctor have commented how strong she is, but she is showing zero signs of progress towards crawling. On her tummy she just lies there squealing and helpless in the same way that she did when she was weeks old, and she hasn’t ever rolled over either. She’s been sitting unaided for about a month or so now though, and she can sit indefinitely! I can count the number of times she’s fallen backwards on one hand, which is pretty impressive given she’s sitting for most of her waking day. She is very happy sitting and I just wonder if we can give up with the tummy time now because 8 months have gone by and we’ve gotten exactly nowhere with it. She hates it and so do we, it’s just miserable and frustrating for everyone involved. How much is tummy time helping now that she is sitting competently? Can she learn to crawl from the sitting position?

I’ve got a bit of milestone anxiety in that she is showing no signs of mobilising at all. I realise this is still normal for her age, but the other babies of a similar age that I know all seem to be ahead of her in their physical development and it does get to me a bit.

Thanks everyone!

My DD hated tummy time with a passion so I basically gave up. She didn’t roll back to front until 8.5 months, but even then on her tummy she’d just ‘superman’ as I liked to call it. She started tolerating being on her tummy for longer periods as time went on and started crawling at 10.5 months.

Mine is almost ten months
She can roll but refuses to and only did this at 8 months.
She sits up all day to still and rarely falls back at all.

I think it's normal honestly.

Some babies miss out the crawling phase and just shuffle on their bums. Don't worry about it, she'll do it in her own way!

Also, I do tummy time with DD and my mum always comments that she never did that with me or my siblings, and we all learned to crawl just fine!

You might aswell be writing this post about my son - exactly the same. He absolutely hated tummy time, but He was very strong and he didn't roll until 8.5 months. He started crawling at 10.5 months which i suppose is a bit late, and ye this was because he wasn't used to the "tummy to floor" position. Now he's 12.5 months and you wouldn't know he was a late crawler and that he hates tummy time. Your baby will be fine.

There is so much pressure these days on tummy time I think. My twins were premature, and my twin daughter hated tummy time and couldn't keep her head up at all. She had head 90th percentile and body on 9th.

After about 9 months she just suddenly started sitting to crawling etc, and walks pretty confidently now at 12.5 months. My son who was very good at tummy time, started to walk after her, and not as confident yet. He didn't roll to the right for a while etc either. I do worry in general, but also think my twins are a good represenation (to me atleast) as to how different babies are, and how much they can change.

Nothing to worry about on your post
