Tongue tie reattached twice… advice on leaving it or doing it again

My sons tongue tie was snipped but the hospital incorrectly at 3.5 weeks. It grew back and I got it checked by them at 8 weeks. They made me feel stupid and said it’s highly unlikely but once they checked it did indeed grow back. They refused to cut it due to scar tissue being too thick. Told me to get a referral to ent 33 week wait!!

Ended up paying privately at 10 weeks. Was told it was quite severe and was cut again. Excersises and aftercare done religiously.

3 weeks on I think it has again reattached. Movement is better but can see the thick white band again and can feel it when putting finger underneath tongue.

I’d have to find another provider as the person I used last time doesn’t cut it after 2 times due to other risks.

So firstly has anyone left a tongue tie? Can you tell me if it’s had any impact on weaning or speaking? As that’s my worry but won’t know until that age.

Or is it worth having it done again or is it safe to leave it. I am worried about both in a sense.

My 12 yr old has a tongue tie. It was only picked up by our dentist when he was around 4/5 yrs old. He has no issues whatsoever with his speech and his teeth seem fine at the moment. The dentist Keeps an eye on it and has mentioned that it can be cut if it causes issues in the future. I couldn’t breast feed when he was a baby and that was probably due to his tongue tie but it has never caused any issues for him.

DS never had his tie cut because Covid.

Breastfeeding
At first he wouldn’t latch and I was exclusive pumping for a few weeks but I eventually managed to get him to latch using nipple shields. Transitioning from bottle to breast was tough but he got there in the end (in fact he eventually swung the other way and decided to become a bottle refuser just before my maternity leave ended Hmm).

In the beginning he was fussy at the breast, fed very frequently, had a lot of reflux and would only feed in the side-lying position. At 8 months he still feeds quite frequently, I am still using nipple shields and he still only feeds in the side-lying position but otherwise no problems.

Weaning
Food tends to get stuck to the roof of his mouth. He doesn’t seem to mind if the food in question is sweet but he hates it when there’s broccoli stuck in his mouth that he can’t spit out. He often makes a mess because he doesn’t open his mouth quite wide enough to get the food in. He can manage mashed food and soft finger foods. He loves anything sweet and if you let him he will devour quite impressive quantities of food.

Speech
He can pronounce the consonants ‘m’, ‘n’, ‘g’, ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘w’, ‘y’ and ’h’.

@seaborgium that’s very insightful thank you so much.

I have had it reconfirmed today it has attached. I’m so gutted. Sometimes wish I had never messed with it. It didn’t seem as bad as it is now.

@Darklava09 hi OP. I know this was some time ago now but did you get the tongue tie cut again? My 14 week old’s has reattached for the second time!

Darklava09 · 28/01/2023 09:01

@SassyPants87 hello

yes I did and reattached for a third time.

I had it cut at 3.5 weeks, 9 weeks and then 8 months.

what I wish now is I never got it cut straight away because I needed to do more excersises with him. So the third time we got sent away for 6 weeks to do stretches, osteo etc to lengthen the tie.

there is some reattachment now from the third time but it’s better. He doesn’t click when drinking but does still struggle with fast flow liquid. He can poke his tongue out now but isn’t speaking yet and he’s 18 months

@Darklava09 thank you for responding! Can I ask where you went to get it done the 3rd time? Apparently I’ve been told it might not be worth getting it cut a third time and do something called scar tissue remodelling which is essentially oral exercises to stretch the tie

Darklava09 · 28/01/2023 09:30

@SassyPants87

gentle births and beyond carmelle gentle. She was really good.
we travelled from the midlands to London twice. She sent us away the first time after showing us ways to stretch out the tie and the cut it the second time. It’s not solved everything. He still suffers with reflux etc but I won’t do it again and we just do stretches such as the guppy pose and now he mimics me we constantly poke it out

@Darklava09 yes I’m based in the midlands too and was looking into seeing Carmelle too. Will drop her a message

Hi all. Just wanted to follow up and see how this ended up. My little one had a tongue tie and we had it cut within a week of her birth. I have started having issues with breastfeeding at about 6 weeks and i thought it might have been an allergy or my flow was too fast but I now understand she her tongue tie has reattached.
I am considering whether to get it cut a second time or go to a specialist right away.
How did your situation pan out?
Thanks in advance for your help

Not the op but I had my sons tounge tie cut 3 times (said I'd try one last time after the second time it reattached) thankfully the third time stuck x

Is it actually causing any issues with feeding currently? If it’s not I would just leave it. My son had a tongue tie but he was breastfeeding fine and I didn’t have any pain, I left it and haven’t really thought about it since until reading this post! He’s 3 now, eats like a house and never stops talking.
